The Nigeria League of Women Voters (NILOWV) and the Federation of Female Lawyers (FIDA) in Benúe State have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) aimed at advancing the women’s cause and empowerment of the society.
Lady Ruth Kpengwa, the State Chairman of NILOWV, that the League founded on the principles of democracy and equality, has been at the forefront of advocating for women’s participation in the political process for decades.
She noted that through their tireless efforts, they have worked to ensure that women’s voices are heard, their concerns addressed, and their rights protected within the democratic framework.
Kpengwa, posited that on the other hand, the FIDA has been a stalwart champion for justice and equality within the legal profession as their dedication to upholding the rule of law and promoting gender equality in the legal system has been instrumental in breaking down barriers and creating opportunities for women in the legal field.
“Today, as we come together to formalise our partnership through the signing of this memorandum, we reaffirm our commitment to working hand in hand towards our shared goals. Together, we will strive to eliminate gender-based discrimination, promote equal access to justice, and empower women to fully participate in all aspects of public life.
“Through collaboration, advocacy, and education, we will work tirelessly to address the systemic challenges that hinder women’s progress and ensure that every woman and girl has the opportunity to thrive and succeed. We will leverage our collective expertise, resources, and networks to effect positive change and build a more inclusive and equitable society for all.”
“As we embark on this journey together, let us remain steadfast in our determination, unwavering in our resolve, and united in our purpose. Let us draw inspiration from the trailblazers who came before us and forge ahead with courage and conviction, knowing that our efforts today will shape the future for generations to come,” she said.
On her part, Chairperson of FIDA in Benúe, Prisca Ula, a lawyer, explained that they (both groups) have the same objective and fighting to obtain same goals using the legal frameworks, adding that collaborating to achieve them was something that FIDA welcomes with open arms.
“Advancing the rights of women and children has always been the path of FIDA which they have in so many ways thrive to ensure women’s rights are advanced in the society.
“We want a society where women have a say and participate, and the political sphere is not an exemption. With this collaboration, we will ensure the women’s voices are heard. We will also pursue legal equality in the political sphere,” the FIDA Chairperson maintained.
