The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Niger state chapter has lamented the negative effects of the lingering strike by the Academic Staff Union Universities,ASUU, on students who are the leaders of tomorrow as well as other sectors of the economy of the country.
Speaking with newsmen at the end of the peaceful solidarity protest on Tuesday in Minna, the Vice Chairman, NLC in the state, Comrade Bako Abdulrahman said the continued stay at home by students of tertiary institutions could lead to increase in crime and all forms of criminalities in the country.
Comrade Bako added that besides the security implications of continued closure of universities, lecturers had been reduced to “mere beggars.”
Abdulrahman called on workers in the state and across the country to ensure they get their Permanent Voter’s Card,PVC, as instrument to “perfect change in the 2023 general elections.
“It is important for all workers in Niger state in particular to also mobilize all entire eligible voters in their households to come out enmasse and ensure they vote into office, leaders who have the interest of the Nigerian masses, including ASUU and others at heart.”
The President, National Association of Niger State Students (NANISS), Comrade Saliha Buhari,advised voting age to use their PVC to “get the change Nigerians desired’.
“We want to encourage every student to please get his or her PVC. Your PVC is your weapon to get the change we all desired,” he said.
The Chairman of ASUU, FUT Minna chapter, Dr. Gbolahan Bolarin, in a remark, appreciated the NLC for the solidarity protest in support of lecturers and expressed hope that the federal government would take steps towards meeting the demands of the striking lecturers so that they could resume classes.
