In a bid to redistribute wealth, with a view to reducing poverty and crime in the society,an Ilorin-based NGO, MMGIVIT Charity Organisation, on Saturday in Ilorin uplifted over 1000 less privileged in the state by extending gesture to them in form of clothing, cutleries, shoes, bags, beddings and mattresses and curtains among others.
Prof. Mohammed Mustapha (SAN), the Founder of MMGIVIT, disclosed this at the sixth edition of 2022 Charity Day at Queen’s hall, Ilorin while speaking with Journalists on the sideline of the Sixth Edition of 2022 Charity Day held in Ilorin.
Mustapha,who is the Vice-Chancellor, Kwara State University, Malete said the idea behind the initiative,which started in 2015, was borne out of the need for him to be remember the actions of his late mother whom he described as very much passionate in giving out to the less privileged.
The philanthropist said that the items were sourced from home and abroad, through the assistance of families, for humanitarian services to add value to the life of the poor in the state and to make life meaningful for them.
The SAN expressed delight that with the success recorded during the maiden edition of the programme in 2016, the management of the NGO decided to add other activities,such as career counseling, advocacy messages, health awareness and screening for various diseases and conditions of the less privileged to make its activities more impactful to the people.
According to him, the NGO has so far reached out to about 72 Community Development Associations and rendered valuable services to over 1,000 people in the state.
The Philantropist stressed the need for concerted effort to be channelled towards meeting the basic needs of the downtrodden with the intention of bringing millions out of poverty in Nigeria.
Contributing,Prof. Noah Yusuf, the Vice-Chancellor, Al-Hikmah, University, expressed optimism that Mustapha’s gesture, if replicated at the local and state levels would impact greatly on the people and rid the country of poverty.
He called on the rich in the country to emulate the action of Mustapha, for them to make a difference in the lives of the less privileged in the society and change the poverty narrative.
