Rep. Shina Abiola Peller, representing Iseyi/Itesiwaju/Kajola/Iwajowa Federal Constituency of Oyo state at the lower Chambers, National Assembly, has thrown his weight behind the call on the political class to ensure that the next president in 2023 general elections to comes from the south.
Peller made his position known while speaking with Journalists, after an hour closed-door meeting with former Military President General Ibrahim Babangida (IBB) at his hilltop residence in Minna.
He hinged his call on the spirit of equity, fairness and justice for all citizens, irrespective of tribal or religious inclinations.
The federal legislator further said: “It is important that political actors,especially from northern Nigeria,to consider what becomes of Nigeria after the 2023 general elections in their individual political pursuits”.
“The most important thing we, Nigerians, need to think about is the peace of the nation at the moment.
“Law abiding and patriotic Nigerians should put peace and unity of Nigeria and Nigerians first before individuals’ political interest.
“The next President should be from south, because doing so would help in the promotion of peace.
“For you to promote peace..we must understand that it is only natural for successor to President Muhammadu Buhari to come from the south.”
While appealing to politicians to change their style of politics and allow the electorate and Nigerians masses to have a say, ahead of the coming polical dispensation, Peller urged eligible voters to identify candidates with criteria that could build bridges of oneness across the diverse ethnic groups in the country.
“The nationwide tour is intended to ensure that peace is maintained across the over 250 ethnic nationalities, before, during and after the 2023 general elections.
“We are on the campaign year and there have already been issues of insecurity in parts of Nigeria. The level of insecurity and nature is bound to escalate from one part of the country to another, so we must be able to take practical steps towards ensuring lasting peace”.
“Nigerian politicians must learn to carry every region along.The peace tour, starting with Niger state, will entail going round the six geo-political zones, especially places affected by insecurity and armed banditry and we hope to entrench peace across the country,” he stressed.
On IBB, Peller described him as a father who supported his peace tour and ensure that the youth did not allow themselves to be used as tools for self destruction, before, during the campaigns and elections.
