The International Worker’s Day, also known as Labour Day or May Day, is commemorated on the first day of May every year to honour and observe the attainments of the workers. _
While speaking to members of his Media Office, the frontline Aspirant for Anambra governorship under the umbrella of PDP Mr Godwin Ezeemo (The Industrialist) stated that May Day is very significant in the life of workers world over.
For the Labour Movement in Nigeria, May Day presents an auspicious opportunity to appraise the contributions of workers to nation building. May Day is also an occasion to reflect on the progress and setbacks in the struggle to improve the lot of workers.
“I wish to use the platform of this year’s May Day to salute the courage and tenacity of Nigerian workers in building a future of shared prosperity. I also salute our pensioners, veterans and allies for staying the course and for keeping the faith,” He stated
Mr Ezeemo stressed that “For millions of workers, no income means no food, no security and no future. Millions of businesses around the world are barely breathing. They have no savings or access to credit. These are the real faces of the world of work. If we don’t help them now, these enterprises will simply perish.”
Mr Ezeemo further maintained that “In reciprocation of the enormous sacrifice made by workers, we urge employers of labour to show solidarity with the sacrifice of our workers and people by ensuring wage protection, income support and social inclusion.”
He called on all tiers of government to provide incentives to drive and sustain the growth of labour-intensive industrial sector.
The aspirant said: “There are millions of jobs locked down in the untapped value chains in our agricultural, Tourism, Sports, ICT, petroleum and mining sectors. Now is the time to unlock them and provide decent jobs for our youth. Now is the time to reconstruct the sour narrative of exporting jobs and prosperity to other climes and importing joblessness, poverty and misery into our motherland.”
“The de-industrialization of Nigeria as already identified is the reason for the plague of mass unemployment and poverty ravaging our country. Industrialisation is the key to delivering sustainable jobs and is crucial for the overall growth of the national economy; it is the foundation for good living standards.
“Unfortunately, the manufacturing capacity utilization (MCU) in our country has fallen headlong over the years. Nigeria might be the largest economy in Africa but the contribution of manufacturing to our economic size is appalling.
Ezeemo salutes the courage, resilience and patriotism of Nigerian workers, pensioners and their families who have continued to endure the profligacy and profanity of an unrepentant ruling class.
“Our fists struck in collective commitment to the struggle are sufficient to achieve the social justice we all desire.” he noted.
“I specially dedicate this May Day to Nigerian workers who lost their lives, a limb or their means of livelihood in this past one year of global tribulation. I dedicate this day to our senior citizens who despite humiliation by the country they served faithfully still turned up daily for the course they believe in.
“You truly embody the finest aspects of our humanity. You continue to inspire the younger generation that there is virtue and honour in honest service,” he said.
Mr Ezeemo, who remains one of the formost Industrialists in Anambra State, under his realistic ‘Anambra Can be Better’, promised to ensure improved workers welfare is made priority, if given the mandate to govern the state come November 6.
