High blood pressure is a common condition that affects more than a quarter of all adults in the UK. But you could be at risk of deadly hypertension if you regularly do weight lifting, it’s been claimed.

High blood pressure – which is also known as hypertension – puts extra stress on blood vessels and vital organs.

The condition could lead to some deadly complications, including strokes and heart attacks.

It could be caused by eating an unhealthy diet, or by not doing enough exercise.

But you could also be raising your risk of high blood pressure symptoms if you regularly do weight lifting.

Weight lifting is one of the worst types of exercise for people with hypertension.

It is particularly intense in short periods, which subsequently causes sudden spikes in blood pressure.

Blood pressure spikes put added pressure on the heart and blood vessels.

Instead, patients should be looking to do more aerobic activities, including cycling or brisk walking, urged charity Blood Pressure UK.

“Different kinds of exercise and activity have different effects on your body,” it said.

“If you have high blood pressure, you should try to focus on activities that will help your heart and blood vessels.

“Aerobic activity is the type that helps your heart the most.

“Other forms of activity are less helpful. For example, you should not do any exercise that is very intensive for short periods of time, such as sprinting or weightlifting.”

Aerobic exercises use the body’s largest muscle groups, and use a number of rhythmic movements.

Other types of aerobic activities include dancing, swimming and jogging.

But, high blood pressure patients should completely avoid some more strenuous activities, including scuba diving and skydiving.

You’ll likely need to be given a certificate from your doctor before being allowed to do these sports.

High blood pressure is often known as ‘the silent killer’, because symptoms only tend to reveal themselves if you have extremely high blood pressure.

The most common high blood pressure symptoms include a pounding in your chest, finding blood in your urine, and severe headaches.

It’s crucial that all adults over 40 years old check their blood pressure at least once every five years.

You can check your blood pressure by visiting your local doctors’ surgery or pharmacy.(copied)
