(Minna)

A 45-year-old dismissed police sergeant, Usman Yohana, said he mounted illegal checkpoint in Niger state to make money and
take care of his family.

He made the confession in Minna when he was arrested by the Police Command in the state, for allegedly setting up illegal checkpoint and extorting from motorists and motorcyclidts.

Duaglobalnews reports that Yohanna was arrested when police detectives, led by the DPO of Gawu Babangida Division discovered an illegal checkpoint on Boyi-Sarkin Daku road.

Sources said everyone who passed through the checkpoint; either by car or motorcycle wass made to part with some money to Yohanna and his group of men now at large.

The suspect said that he was dismissed from police service since February 2019 at Sabon Tasha Division of the Kaduna state Police Command.

He said that he had to set up the illegal checkpoint and claimed to people that he was attached to Federal SARS in Abuja, because he wanted to make money to fend for his family.

Yohanna said that after his dismissal, feeding became very difficult and getting another source of livelihood was herculean

This development he said prompted him and his friends to devise means of survival by setting up checkpoint when they noticed that the area was secluded thus making it difficult for law enforcement agencies to discover them.

The Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), for the command,ASP Wasiu Abiodun, said that the police recovered complete set of Police camouflage uniform from the suspect.

The police image maker, who said that other members of the gang were on the run, gave assurance that the police were on their trail and would bring them to justice soon.
