The Coronavirus Prevention Committee of the University of Ilorin has it had screened four of its foreign for coronavirus symptoms and found them tested negative to the global pandemic disease.
Speaking with journalists in Ilorin on Wednesday, chairperson of the committee, Dr. Idayat Adurotoye, said that three of the students were from Ghana while the other one came from Chad.
She also said that the institution had examined the foreign students on symptoms of COVID-19, adding that they were all cleared.
Adurotoye said the university set up the committee in response to the outbreak of the disease, to ensure adequate measures to prevent the disease.
“We have planned on how to distribute hand sanitiser and other preventive kits to our Fufu campus where remedial programmes are taking place.
“Same goes for the College of Health Sciences, Institute of Education, as well as the main campus and other areas that are necessary.
Duaglobalnews recals that authorities of the institution had earlier directed its returning international students to go for medical examination, to ascertain their health regarding coronavirus.
The Director, Centre for International Education (CIE) of the institution,Prof. Felicia Olasheinde-Williams, gave the directive in a letter addressed to the international students.
She said that the directive was necessary to prevent the spread of Coronavirus on campus.
“Note that this medical test is an important requirement for maintaining your studentship with the University.
“As such, you are enjoined to adhere strictly to the directive immediately on your arrival.”
‘The university has also set up a Coronavirus Disease Prevention Committee that has been working round the clock to prevent/control the spread of COVID-19 within the University community.
“In addition to sensitisation activities through various platforms, construction and equipping of wash-up areas are ongoing.
Duaglobalnews gathered the university has also setup a 24/7 emergency and outbreak management network.
This includes the Unilorin Healthcare Centre, the University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital, the Sobi Specialist Hospital and the Nigerian Centre for Disease Control (NCDC).
Meanwhile, Kwara state government says it will shut down schools from March 23 in respect of coronavirus.
Rafiu Ajakaye, the Chief Press Secretary (CPS) to the Governor of Kwara State, disclosed this in a statement in Ilorin on Wednesday.
He said:”I can confirm that Kwara State will be shutting down schools from Monday March 23rd.
“It is part of the efforts to contain the global spread of the COVID-19 pandemic.
“We urge our people to maintain the highest level of hygiene, remain calm and adhere to all safety measures earlier announced by the Kwara State Ministry of Health and other national bodies.”
