The Director General of Nigeria Diaspora for Asiwaju (NDA) Worldwide, Akin Badeji, has appealed to Nigerians to refrain from spreading unverified reports and engaging in what he described as “trial by social media” concerning the Director General and Chief Executive Officer of the Energy Commission of Nigeria,Dr. Abdullahi Mustapha.
In a statement issued on Friday, Badeji said recent reports and rumours circulating online about the Energy Commission boss should be treated with caution, stressing that an invitation for questioning by authorities does not amount to a conviction.
According to him, every citizen is entitled to the constitutional presumption of innocence until proven guilty by a competent court of law.
“It is important to clearly state that being invited for questioning or investigation does not amount to a declaration of guilt.
“In every democratic society governed by the rule of law, every individual is entitled to fairness, dignity, and the constitutional principle of innocence until proven guilty by a competent court of law,”he said.
Badeji noted that no court had convicted the official of any wrongdoing and urged Nigerians to avoid spreading misinformation or allegations capable of damaging reputations and heating up the polity unnecessarily.
“At this stage, no court conviction has been established against him, and Nigerians must therefore avoid spreading misinformation, false accusations, or unverified claims capable of damaging reputations and creating unnecessary public tension,” he added.
The NDA Worldwide DG disclosed that he personally visited the Energy Commission chief and found him calm and cooperative with authorities handling the matter.
“I visited him personally today and I can confirm that he remains calm, strong, and cooperative with relevant authorities in the ongoing process,” Badeji stated.
He called on the public to allow relevant institutions to carry out their duties professionally and without interference, while also urging citizens to remain patient and objective as investigations continue.
“As responsible citizens, we must avoid trial by social media and resist the temptation to condemn individuals before the conclusion of lawful investigations,” he stressed.
“Justice, fairness, and due process are fundamental pillars of democracy and must always be respected.”
Badeji further stressed the need for responsible public discourse anchored on facts rather than speculation, expressing hope that truth and justice would prevail in the matter.
“I encourage Nigerians to remain peaceful, objective, and patient while the appropriate authorities continue their work. We must continue to promote responsible public discourse built on facts rather than speculation,” he said.
He also prayed for the sustenance of accountability, integrity, and the rule of law in the country.
“I pray that truth, justice, and fairness prevail in all matters, and that our nation continues to uphold the principles of accountability, integrity, and the rule of law,” he added.
