Troops of the 12 Brigade, Nigerian Army, Lokoja, Kogi State have recorded a major operational breakthrough under Operation IGBO IDANU I, dealing what the military described as a decisive blow to a terrorist network in the state.
The operation, personally led by the Commander of 12 Brigade, Brig.-Gen. Kasim Umar Sidi, targeted a suspected terrorist enclave in a forested area of the state.
Although the suspects reportedly fled upon sighting the advancing troops, soldiers recovered a cache of arms and ammunition, including eight boxes of 7.62 x 54mm link ammunition containing bandoliers of 250 rounds each, as well as one box of high-velocity grenades.
The Army Headquarters confirmed the development in a statement posted on its verified X (formerly Twitter) platform.
According to the statement, the recovery of the weapons has significantly degraded the operational capability and logistics base of the criminal elements.
“Following the successful clearance operation, the terrorist camp was systematically destroyed and set ablaze to deny the criminals any opportunity of reoccupation,” the statement said.
The Army disclosed that the troops advanced through dense forest, difficult terrain and multiple riverine obstacles during the operation.
“Despite severe movement constraints caused by fallen trees and marshy ground, the force pressed forward with determination, displaying exceptional resilience, professionalism and tactical discipline.
“This bold manoeuvre enabled the troops to penetrate deep into the terrorist enclave, resulting in the complete overrun of the camp,” the statement added.
The military further stated that troops have sustained aggressive patrols and offensive operations in the general area to exploit the success, disrupt fleeing suspects and prevent any attempt at regrouping.
It reaffirmed the Nigerian Army’s commitment to identifying and neutralising criminal hideouts, safeguarding lives and property, and restoring lasting peace and security in the region.
