The National Chairman of the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Tanimu Turaki (SAN), has called for a comprehensive overhaul and restructuring of Nigeria’s security architecture to make it more responsive to the nation’s growing security challenges.
Turaki made the appeal when he led a high-powered PDP delegation on a sympathy visit to the Governor of Niger State, Mohammed Umar Bago, following last Friday’s abduction of pupils and staff of Papiri Catholic Primary and Secondary Schools in Agwara.
The PDP chieftain expressed deep concern over the worsening insecurity, lamenting that terrorism has now become a “big business” that must be confronted decisively before it destroys the foundation of the country and the government in power.
He stressed that the protection of lives and property can only be achieved through collaborative national efforts.
Turaki noted that Nigerians can no longer move freely across the country without fear, adding that bandits militant groups among others now pose serious threats to national stability.
“Only united, collective action can bring an end to their reign,” he said.
He prayed for God’s intervention and the safe return of the abducted pupils and staff, assuring the governor that the PDP stands with the people of Niger State during this difficult time.
“We feel what you feel. We are with you, and we will support you in every way possible to restore peace and progress,” he added.
Despite being from an opposition party, Turaki commended Governor Bago for the steps already taken to rescue the victims, emphasizing that PDP members are Nigerians first and share the same concerns over the plight of the missing children and teachers.
In his response, Governor Mohammed Umar Bago applauded Turaki for leading the PDP National Working Committee on the solidarity visit, describing it as an act of humanity, compassion, and commitment to democratic values.
The governor urged Nigerians to unite and protect the nation’s democracy, warning that criminal activities,particularly in the northern regions,pose a serious threat to national stability.
