The Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) committee constituted to assess the health status of Nnamdi Kanu, the detained leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), has requested additional time to conclude its report.
The Counsel to the Department of State Services (DSS), Suraj Sa’ada, SAN, informed Justice James Omotosho of the Federal High Court, Abuja, on Wednesday that the medical panel was yet to complete its assignment.
Sa’ada explained that the committee intended to carry out a comprehensive evaluation and, therefore, required more time to ensure a thorough job. He urged the court to grant the panel an additional one week to finalise its work.
Kanu’s counsel, Onyechi Ikpeazu, SAN, did not object to the application for an adjournment.
Following the submissions of both parties, Justice Omotosho adjourned the matter until October 16 to allow the NMA committee to complete its task.
Our correspondent recalls that in a ruling on September 26, the court had directed the NMA President to set up a team of medical experts to examine Kanu and determine whether he is medically fit to continue his ongoing trial on terrorism-related charges.
