The family of Mr. Ayobami Aiyepeku, a photojournalist allegedly murdered by his friend, is demanding justice following the shocking death of the prime suspect, who reportedly took his own life days after the incident.
Ayobami was allegedly killed on Tuesday evening, around 8:30 p.m., in Lokoja by his friend and colleague, Jacob Adebayo Pelumi, an officer of the Nigerian Correctional Service. Pelumi reportedly absconded with Ayobami’s body after committing the crime.
According to the Police Command in the state,Pelumi was found dead in a Kogi State room in Lokoja. His corpse was discovered with a suicide note and an empty bottle of Sniper, a highly toxic pesticide.
The Aiyepeku family is appealing to the Federal and Kogi State Governments, the Inspector General of Police (IGP), and security agencies to uncover the full circumstances behind Ayobami’s murder, recover his remains, and ensure that those involved are brought to justice.
Described as kind, humble, and hardworking, Ayobami had worked for the past four years as a photojournalist without any known disputes at his workplace.
Chief James Aiyepeku, Ayobami’s father, pleaded with Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo and the police to recover his son’s body and hold those responsible accountable.
“Ayobami was a very gentle and hardworking young man. He never quarreled with anyone. I appeal to the authorities to help find his body and ensure justice is served,” the grieving father said.
Ayobami’s elder brother, Mr. Timothy Aiyepeku, and uncle, Dr. Ibikunle Jide, also urged the police to intensify efforts in solving the case and bringing closure to the family.
“As I speak to you, Ayobami’s body is still missing. We want the truth to come out. We need justice,” Timothy said.
“We commend the police for their work so far, but they must do more. Government support is crucial to recovering the body and ensuring justice,” added Dr. Jide.
The police have launched a full investigation. A Hilux van and a deep freezer believed to have been used by the suspect were recovered. The case has since been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) for further probe.

The police are seeking the collaboration of the deceased’s family, colleagues, and the public to volunteer credible information to aid in the investigation.
