The ruling political party in Nigeria, the All Progressives Congress (APC) on Thursday appointed Professor Nentawe Yilwatda, the Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Disaster Management, as its new National Chairman.

Yilwatda, 56, hails from Plateau State and was sworn in immediately after his selection during the ongoing meeting of the APC National Executive Committee (NEC) in Abuja.

The motion for his appointment was moved by the Chairman of the Progressive Governors’ Forum and Governor of Imo State, Hope Uzodimma. It was seconded by the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Hon. Abbas Tajudeen.

Yilwatda succeeds Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, who stepped down from the position recently due to health-related issues.

Before his ministerial appointment, Yilwatda was a university lecturer and the APC governorship candidate in Plateau State during the 2023 general elections.

His emergence as the new national chairman , who replaced Dr. Abdullahi Ganduje, follows a consensus reached at a late-night meeting between President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and APC governors in Abuja.
