The remains of former President Muhammadu Buhari arrived at the Umaru Musa Yar’Adua International Airport in Katsina on Tuesday, July 15, 2025, for onward movement to Daura, his hometown for burial according to Islamic rites.
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, accompanied by his wife, Senator Oluremi and a high-powered delegation of federal officials, personally received the casket shortly afternoon noon.
A brief but solemn military ceremony was held at the airport in honour of the late leader.
Buhari died in London on Saturday, July 13, 2025, at the age of 82.
His body was flown back to Nigeria for full state and Islamic burial rites, in line with national protocol and Islamic tradition.
Preparations for his final interment are in top gear in Daura, Katsina State, where the late president, whose remains were in ambulance to Daura for a befitting burial.
President Tinubu is serving as the chief mourner, underscoring the gravity of the national loss.
Until his death, Muhammadu Buhari was Nigeria’s President from 2015 to 2023,was widely known for his military background, austere lifestyle, and anti-corruption stance.
The burial ceremony marks the final journey of a man who shaped the country’s modern political landscape and left an indelible mark on the nation’s history.
The late president’s wife, Hajia Aisha, other members of his family and other important dignitaries and top military brass, members of NYSC,,among others witnessed the event.
Many political gladiators in Nigeria shelved their political differences as they gathered to psy their last respect to the man known for his absolute purposeful military and political leadership and widely known as ‘Maigaskiya’ meaning the one known for truth and integrity.

Buhari, a former military Head of State and two-term democratically elected President of Nigeria, was laid to rest in the courtyard of his private residence in Daura. The burial followed Islamic rites and was marked by a 21-gun salute.
