Life has been described as mere vanity, not worth the endless struggles and material pursuits that define modern existence.
This was the central message delivered by Venerable Timothy Akande of the Diocese of Lokoja, Anglican Communion, during the funeral service of Mama Juliana Arinola Mosugu (née Boro), held at the Cathedral Church of St. Peter, Ogori in Ogori Magongo Local Government Area of kogi state.
In a sermon rich with philosophical and spiritual reflection, the cleric said that death remains the only true inheritance passed down from the Garden of Eden, adding that it is a constant reminder of human mortality and the fleeting nature of earthly existence.
“From Eden, man did not inherit silver or gold, but death.
“Therefore, let no man boast of what he has, for all is vanity,”he declared, pausing as the congregation listened in solemn silence.
He urged the congregation to embrace love as commanded by God, stating that genuine love for others is a true measure of one’s obedience to the divine will.
“He who claims to know God but does not love his neighbor, has missed the road,” Akande asserted.
Speaking directly to the children of the deceased, the Venerable admonished them to carry forward their mother’s legacy of compassion and generosity.
“Your mother lived in peace with all. She opened her heart to the weak, the poor, and the forsaken. This is a virtue more valuable than any inheritance,” he noted.
The preacher warned against hoarding wealth while others languish in poverty.
He reminded mourners that earthly riches are transient, reminding them that the greatest asset any man can acquire is love.
In a tone that blended wisdom with experience, he called on all present,young and old,to reflect on their own lives.
Our correspondent reports that Mama Juliana Arinola Mosugu was remembered not only as a mother and community leader but as a woman of peace, whose faith in God was unwavering.
Her life, though ended in the physical, continues as a moral compass for those she left behind, the preacher explained.
In a world driven by status and possession, the message from Venerable Akande is clear: Life is but a vapor. What truly endures is not what we gather, but what we give.
