The Nasarawa State Government has launched a large-scale awareness campaign to educate flood-prone communities and the general public on the need to clear waterways ahead of the rainy season to prevent flooding.
The Commissioner for Environment and Natural Resources, Barr. Isaac Danladi, disclosed this on Saturday in Lafia while addressing journalists after the March sanitation exercise.
Danladi said the initiative was prompted by predictions from the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMET) and past flood disasters that led to loss of lives and property.
“We have put measures in place to ensure that drainage channels and structures obstructing waterways are cleared to allow free flow of water,” he said.
He added that the government is working with traditional and religious leaders, community heads, and the media to raise awareness about the dangers of flooding and preventive measures.
Speaking on the sanitation exercise, Danladi commended residents for their level of compliance and urged greater cooperation.
Presiding over his first sanitation exercise since assuming office, the commissioner encouraged residents to adopt daily environmental hygiene practices to prevent disease outbreaks.
“A clean environment reduces the risk of disease outbreaks and promotes better public health,” he added.
He assured that under his leadership, the ministry would strive to make Nasarawa one of the cleanest states in Nigeria.
Danladi also expressed gratitude to Governor Abdullahi Sule for the opportunity to serve and commended traditional rulers, the media, and other stakeholders for their support in ensuring a successful sanitation exercise.
