The Kogi State Governor, Ahmed Usman Ododo, has congratulated the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) on its 70th anniversary, reaffirming his administration’s commitment to ensuring press freedom and media independence.
This message was shared in a statement signed by Ismaila Isah, the Special Adviser on Media to the Governor, and was made available to The Reporters in Lokoja on Monday.
Governor Ododo lauded the NUJ for its outstanding contributions to democracy, good governance, and national development over the past seven decades.
He recognized the media as a vital pillar of democracy, playing an essential role in holding leaders accountable and ensuring transparency in governance.
“For seventy years, the NUJ has been at the forefront of responsible journalism, defending press freedom, and shaping public discourse.
” A free and independent press is the bedrock of a thriving democracy, and my administration is committed to fostering an environment where journalists can work without fear or intimidation,” the governor said.
Governor Ododo also acknowledged the resilience and dedication of journalists, who continue to provide credible information despite various challenges.
He, however ,emphasized the importance of maintaining ethical standards, combating misinformation, and embracing technological advancements,by journalists, to enhance their professional excellence.
The governor assured media practitioners in Kogi State of his administration’s ongoing support in strengthening the press as a catalyst for positive change.
He urged the NUJ to remain resolute in its mission to uphold journalistic integrity and professionalism.
“As we celebrate this milestone, I commend the leadership and members of the NUJ for their unwavering commitment to truth and accountability. I am confident the union will continue to set high standards in journalism, contributing to the progress of our great nation,” he concluded,”the governor said.
Ododo wished the NUJ continued success in its efforts to uphold a free, independent, and responsible press.
