Governor Mohammed Umaru Bago of Niger State has called for greater inclusivity of women in leadership roles, emphasizing their vital role in the nation’s growth and development, with particular focus on his home state.
In a bold move to advance gender equality in governance, the Governor has announced that all Vice Chairmanship positions in the upcoming Local Government Council (LGC) elections will be automatically reserved for women.
This initiative is aimed at breaking the barriers that have traditionally hindered women’s full participation in politics, offering them the opportunity to demonstrate their abilities and contribute to the country’s progress.
Governor Bago, in a statement released in Minna by his Special Adviser (Print Media), Aisha Wakaso, expressed his firm belief that eliminating gender biases would not only encourage more women to engage in political processes but also enable them to showcase their leadership capacity.
He reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to women’s inclusion, starting at the local government level, where he sees the potential for transformative change.
Bago highlighted that women should no longer be seen as the ‘weaker sex’ but as valuable partners in the realization of the collective dreams of Nigerlites.
He cited the impactful roles women have historically played in leadership, proving their ability to drive national progress and development.
Governor Bago noted that when given the opportunity, women have consistently demonstrated their potential to achieve and even surpass what their male counterparts have done.
The Governor emphasized that empowering women, particularly at the local government level, is not just a matter of fairness but a strategic move to foster sustainable development across all sectors.
“It’s not about filling a quota; it’s about recognizing the strength, resilience, and intelligence of our women. They bring balance, innovation, and a unique perspective that is crucial for the even development of our society,” Bago said.
