By correspondent in Calabar.

South-South political leaders have strongly defended the Senator representing Kogi Central, Chief Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, commending her for her intelligence, self-control, and unwavering voice in the Senate.

They also expressed support for the President of the Senate, Chief Godswill Akpabio, praising the positive and cooperative relationship between the two, amidst growing political tensions.

In a statement issued following a meeting in Calabar on Sunday, the leaders addressed the recent wave of rumors aimed at tarnishing the reputations of both Akpabio and Akpoti-Uduaghan.

These rumors, which include baseless allegations of sexual harassment and claims of sidelining Akpoti-Uduaghan within the Senate, were dismissed by the leaders as “wicked” and “malicious” attacks designed to cause division.

“The smear campaigns against Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan are calculated to create unnecessary rifts between her and the Senate leadership. These attempts to paint her as antagonistic to the Senate President are both irresponsible and politically motivated,” said Chief John Harry, the National Chairman of the South-South Front.

The leaders called out the individuals and political operatives behind these allegations, accusing them of trying to disrupt the unity within the Senate for their own gain.

They stressed that Akpoti-Uduaghan’s contributions to national development, along with her strong stance on various issues, should not be undermined by such detractors.

Harry also expressed appreciation for the inclusive leadership style of Senate President Akpabio, who he noted has fostered a peaceful and collaborative environment in the upper chamber of the National Assembly.

The South-South leaders voiced their support for both Akpabio and Akpoti-Uduaghan, urging Nigerians from all regions to rally behind the two politicians in the face of growing political tension.

“Despite the baseless attacks and criticism, Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan remains resolute and dedicated to the progress of the nation. No amount of political blackmail or false narratives will alter her course,” they said.

The political figures reiterated their commitment to supporting both Akpoti-Uduaghan and Akpabio, describing the ongoing attacks as a direct assault on the unity of the Senate and the collective sensibilities of Nigerians.
