A Special Court in the FCT has prosecuted 51 traffic offenders, following their arrest by the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC).
In the same vein, one Chris Nwakanu, who allegedly assaulted road safety personnel during the course of their lawful duties has been reminded at Kuje Correctional Centre.
Mr. Chorrie Muta’a, the FRSC Sector Commander for the FCT Command, made the disclosure in Abuja on Thursday while responding to the case of traffic violation by Chris Nwakanu.
The sector commander who said that the prosecuted road offenders were arrested along Jabi-Airport Road, expressed the resolve of the commission to intensify efforts curbing traffic violations in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), especially sequel to the recent surge in traffic infractions in the territory.
Our correspondent gathered that Chief Magistrate Emmanuel Iyanna remanded Nwakanu for alleged dangerous driving, resistance to arrest, and assault on FRSC personnel when the accused appeared before him during a special court session.
Muta’a, who cited infractions such as overloading, speeding, one-way driving, and disobedience to traffic rules, emphasized that the Corps’ efforts to address these violations were part of its broader strategy to reduce road crashes and promote road safety nationwide.
He expressed concern that in spite of sensitization campaigns, motor park rallies, and town hall meetings with major stakeholders in the transport sector, many commercial drivers in the FCT continued to flout traffic regulations.
“In spite of our efforts to educate motorists on the importance of adhering to traffic rules, some individuals continue to flout these regulations, putting themselves and others at risk.
“The FRSC has identified the Zuba-Gwagwalada, Zuba-Kubwa, and Nyanya-A.Y.A Express Way corridors as notorious areas for traffic infractions.
“We will no longer take these nonchalant attitudes. The FRSC is committed to ensuring safety of lives and property. We will continue to arrest and prosecute any traffic violators,” he said.
Muta’a assured that the corps would carry out its assignment within the law to punish and prosecute traffic offenders in the six area councils of the FCT.
He urged FCT residents to join the FRSC’s efforts in promoting road safety and socio-economic activities in the capital city.
“We appeal to motorists to cooperate with us in ensuring that our roads are safe for all users. We will continue to work tirelessly to enforce traffic laws and prevent accidents,” Muta’a added.
