The Governing Council of the University of Abuja (UniAbuja) has announced the appointment of Professor Aisha Sani Maikudi as the institution’s seventh substantive Vice-Chancellor (VC).

Her appointment, approved during the council’s 77th extraordinary meeting on December 31, 2024, takes effect on January 1, 2025, for a single, nonrenewable five-year tenure.

Professor Maikudi emerged as the top candidate among 10 shortlisted applicants after a rigorous interview process conducted by the Joint Council and Senate Selection Board (JCSSB).

Before her appointment as Vice-Chancellor, Maikudi served as UniAbuja’s acting VC from July 5, 2024.

Born on January 31, 1983, in Katsina, she is a distinguished scholar and professor of International Law.

Her academic journey began at Sacred Heart School, Kaduna, where she earned her First School Leaving Certificate (FSLC) in 1993.

She proceeded to Queens College, Yaba, Lagos, obtaining her West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) in 1999.

Maikudi earned an LLB from the University of Reading, UK, in 2004, and later an LLM specializing in Public International Law from the London School of Economics and Political Science in 2005.

After completing her legal education at the Nigerian Law School (2006–2007), she pursued and obtained a PhD in International Law from the University of Abuja in 2015.

With this appointment, Professor Aisha Maikudi becomes the second female Vice-Chancellor in the history of the University of Abuja.

Professor Laraba Gambo Abdullahi was the first female Vice-Chancellor of the University of Abuja, serving from 1999 to 2004. She was also the first female Vice-Chancellor in Northern Nigeria, according to Wikipedia.
