The National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA) has called on Nigerians to avoid using substandard and poorly maintained boats while urging the National Assembly to expedite the passage of the Coast Guard Bill. The legislation aims to enhance safety and security on the country’s waterways.
Speaking during a technical meeting with boat manufacturers in Abuja, NIWA’s Managing Director, Mr. Bola Oyebamiji, emphasized the urgent need for legislative action, particularly after the December 16, 2024, boat mishap along the River Benue in Agatu Local Government Area, Benue State, which resulted in numerous fatalities.
Commenting on the rising frequency of boat accidents, Oyebamiji attributed 90% of these incidents to human error, including lack of professionalism and training among boat operators. He also raised concerns about cases of boat drivers operating under the influence of intoxicants.
“I attended a training session with some boat drivers and found that many are not only untrained but also intoxicated early in the day. This is unacceptable, and we are working tirelessly to address these issues,” he stated.
NIWA is intensifying collaborations with indigenous boat builders to phase out unsafe wooden boats in favor of modern, safer alternatives that meet global standards.
“We are actively working to replace wooden boats with durable, safer options. This initiative is essential for eliminating unsafe practices and ensuring passenger safety,” Oyebamiji said.
Additionally, NIWA has launched sensitization campaigns across riverine communities, educating residents on the dangers of unsafe boats and the importance of adhering to safety protocols. Oyebamiji stressed that legislative support is critical for achieving lasting improvements.
“We have visited many riverine villages and cities to promote safety on our waterways,” he noted.
He called on the National Assembly to prioritize the passage of the Coast Guard Bill, which would equip NIWA with the tools needed to regulate and secure Nigeria’s waterways effectively.
Reaffirming NIWA’s commitment to passenger safety, Oyebamiji urged collaborative efforts from boat operators, passengers, and policymakers to prevent future tragedies. He also reiterated the agency’s focus on improving water transportation infrastructure and enforcing safety standards nationwide.
