The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) FCT Council has expressed shock over the sudden passing of Mrs. Rafat Idris Salami,a former Secretary of the Council and a distinguished journalist.
She passed away in the early hours of Friday, December 20, 2024, in Abuja, during a brief illness.
Comrade Jide Oyekunle, Secretary of the Council, in a statement he signed and a copy available to The Reporters, described Mrs. Idris’s death as a shocking loss to the Union and the journalism profession.
“Rafat was a great asset to journalism and a quintessential journalist who served the Union meritoriously in many capacities.
“She was not only a remarkable leader but also a cherished friend and a mother to all,” he said.
Mrs. Idris held several positions during her illustrious career.
She was the Assistant Director of Digital Media at Voice of Nigeria (VON), the former Assistant Secretary of the International Press Institute (IPI) Nigeria, and was recently re-elected Treasurer of the Institute just last week.
Beyond her professional achievements, Mrs. Idris was a passionate advocate for special needs children, founding the Okenite Foundation to support their care.
Known for her warm personality and dedication to service, she remained a pillar of support to her colleagues and the Union.
A native of Ihima in Okehi Local Government Area of Kogi State, Mrs. Idris Salami is survived by her three children.
She has been laid to rest today at the Gudu Cemetery in Abuja, following Islamic rites.
The NUJ FCT Council therefore extent its heartfelt condolences to her family, the Voice of Nigeria, and all who had the privilege of knowing and working with her.
Mrs. Rafat Idris Salami will be remembered for her professionalism, dedication, and the indelible mark she left on journalism in Nigeria.
