The Federal Government has confirmed that the newly detected XEC COVID-19 variant, identified in Australia and several European countries, is not present in Nigeria.
Kachollum Daju, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Health and Social Welfare, Abuja ,clarified that a leaked letter addressed to Chief Medical Directors was a precautionary measure, not meant to alarm the public.
Daju explained that the variant has been detected in 29 countries and emphasized the importance of vigilance during the festive season, as travelers from various regions enter the country.
In a letter dated December 5, 2024, the Ministry urged healthcare institutions to enhance alert systems and maintain a high index of suspicion for patients displaying COVID-like symptoms.
The letter, signed by Dr. O.N. Anuma on behalf of the Permanent Secretary, stressed the need for collaboration among stakeholders to monitor and respond to the situation effectively.
“The newly detected XEC COVID-19 variant, reported in Australia and now in 29 countries, shows a growth advantage over other strains, raising concerns about its potential impact on public health,” the letter stated.
It also directed hospitals to activate alert systems immediately and emphasized the importance of timely information sharing for an effective response strategy.
