In a chilling act of criminality, unidentified gunmen have abducted Mr. Gregory Madu, a journalist with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), in Owerri, Imo State.
The abduction occurred on Thursday at Irete, Owerri West Local Government Area, where Madu had gone to inspect a parcel of land, according to sources familiar with the incident.
Mr. Madu, recently transferred to Imo State from the agency’s Abuja office, is now in the clutches of his captors, who have reportedly demanded a ransom of N50 million.
Confirming the incident, the State Police Public Relations Officer, Henry Okoye, disclosed that the abductors have contacted Madu’s colleagues, making their financial demand clear.
“Yes, a colleague from NAN has lodged a complaint with the command, and investigations are already underway to unravel the circumstances surrounding the abduction,” Okoye said.
Police say efforts are ongoing to secure the journalist’s release, while the incident has heightened concerns about security in the state.
Meanwhile,The Reporters learnt that the kidnapped Journalist has regained freedom.
According to Vital mews, Mmaduakolam, who was kidnapped on Thursday, December 5, was set free by his abductors in the early hours of Saturday, December 7, following the payment of a substantial ransom by his family.
Our correspondent gathered that the exact amount paid as ransom remain elusive at the time of this report.
Authorities have yet to provide further details regarding the incident.
Kidnappers Release NAN Journalist After Collecting Huge Ransom
Mr Gregory Mmaduakolam, the Journalist working with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) who was kidnapped on Thursday, Dec. 5 in Owerri, Imo State has been released by his abductors.
One of the colleges of the released Journalist in Abuja,who did not disclose her identity, confirmed his release in a statement she made available to The Reporters in Lokoja at about 1.20 p.m on Saturday.
She said:”Hurray!!! Our colleague, Gregory Maduakolam, is free. He just called to inform me that he was released, this morning, after his family paid over N6.6m to his captors. Glory to God!
