Godwin Emmanuel, a 23-year-old robbery suspect, has admitted to stealing a police officer’s phone while being transported to the Police Command in Osun State .
“I didn’t know the phone belonged to a policeman. I took it because I wanted to contact my family, who didn’t know I’d been arrested,” Emmanuel said.
“I ask them to forgive me. I didn’t mean any harm,” he pleaded, expressing regret for his actions.
He explained that he removed the SIM card and hid the phone in his cell until it was discovered during a routine search.
The suspect, along with co-suspects; Olajide Kareem (28) and Emmanuel Mike (33), was arrested for allegedly robbing motorists on the Ilesa-Osu Expressway, according to the police command.
According to the spokesperson ,Police Command in the state ,Yemisi Opalola, the trio had been targeting drivers and passengers, stealing valuables, and in one case, shooting a bus driver in the leg.
According to the police image maker,the injured driver was rushed to the Seventh-day Adventist Hospital in Ile-Ife for treatment.
The command’s spokesman added that Kareem was apprehended shortly after one of the robberies while attempting to hide in a bush, pointing out that the suspect confessed to being part of a five-man gang from Ikorodu, Lagos State.
The other suspects were later captured.
The Police Command stated that investigations are ongoing and reaffirmed its dedication to combating criminal activity and ensuring public safety.
