The Benue State government has approved the domestication of the Disability Bill, marking a significant step toward enhancing rights and opportunities for Persons With Disabilities (PWDs) in the state.
This decision fulfills a commitment made by Governor Hyacinth Alia to expedite the passage of the bill, which had been pending for approval at the State House of Assembly.
The governor announced the approval through his Chief Press Secretary, Tersoo Kula, following a State Executive Council (SEC) meeting yesterday night.
“The Council also approved the domestication of the Disability Bill (2024), granting persons with disabilities equal rights and protections against discrimination,” Kula stated, highlighting the bill’s focus on inclusion.
The governor had assured PWD advocates of his support in October, expressing his administration’s dedication to ensuring that PWDs have a voice in Benue State.
He emphasised this commitment through recent appointments, including a Special Assistant on Disability and a Sign Language Interpreter, to foster inclusivity in government affairs.
Governor Alia also thanked the Inclusive Friends Association (IFA) for its persistent advocacy, hinting at further advancements in disability rights under his leadership.
Earlier, IFA Executive Director Grace Jerry underscored Benue’s unique position as the last state in North Central Nigeria yet to domesticate the disability bill.
During several advocacy visits to state officials, including members of the Assembly and Prof. Jerome Andohol of the Benue State Budget and Economic Planning Commission, the association called for swift action to protect and promote the rights of PWDs in the state.
