The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Niger State Council, has raised alarm over the recent increase in urban crime, particularly involving under-aged children breaking into homes and businesses in major cities across the state.
The union urges for sustainable solutions to alleviate citizens’ hardships, criticizing the distribution of palliatives and cash as insufficient to address the root causes of economic distress.
A communique jointly signed by communique drafting committee; Moses Ishaku, Chairman, Zainab Halilu Kobo, Secretary, Abubakar Hassan Shiyaki, and the Council Secretary, Comrade Usman Chiji observed with dismay how street urchins, apparently under the influence of hard drugs, metamorphose into hardened criminals breaking into homes and commercial facilities daily.
The NUJ called on law enforcement to take proactive measures to combat this trend, especially among minors who are increasingly committing these crimes. They also urged the state government to address security issues stemming from illegal artisanal mining activities in Minna.
To combat rising crime, the union emphasized the importance of joint security monitoring in identified hotspots. Additionally, they recommend swift action from the government regarding the resettlement of residents living in flood-prone areas to mitigate humanitarian crises.
Furthermore, the union expressed dissatisfaction with the distribution of relief materials, advocating for improved monitoring to prevent diversion and ensure aid reaches those in need.
The NUJ commended the Mohammed Umar Bago administration for its infrastructural initiatives, urging contractors in Minna to expedite action on road construction projects to meet deadlines.
