Professor Olajide Ifedayo Ibietan of the Federal University, Lokoja, kogi state,has proposed several strategies for Nigeria to effectively tackle corruption.
These include, enhancing fiscal discipline, adopting robust financial management practices, and improving the utilization of national and human resources at both central and sub-national levels.
Professor Ibietan, who delivered the 21st Inaugural Lecture of the Federal University titled “A Public Administrationist’s Perspective,” emphasized the importance of strengthening public accountability mechanisms and institutions to promote transparency and commitment in Nigeria’s public affairs.
He argued that addressing corruption requires not only stiffer penalties and the effective implementation of necessary sanctions but also a cultural shift towards greater citizen engagement and feedback.
This approach,he added,would help to de-politicize institutions responsible for maintaining moral integrity and accountability in the public sector.
Ibietan also stressed the need for synergy between academics and practitioners, citing successful models in countries like South Africa and Kenya.
He noted that corruption is perpetuated by ethical deficits, ineffective law enforcement, poor managerial capacity, and bureaucratic rigidities.

In his address of welcome, Vice Chancellor of the university, Professor Olayemi Akinwumi, underscored the significance of Professor Ibietan’s lecture.
He emphasized the crucial role of public bureaucracy in implementing government policies and acknowledged Ibietan’s notable contributions to the field of public administration.
