Niger State’s Acting Governor, Comrade Yakubu Garba, praised citizens for abstaining from the nationwide protest held from August 1-10, 2024. The protest, which highlighted severe economic challenges and was organized under the hashtags
#EndBadGovernanceInNigeria and #EndHungerNow, called attention to widespread hunger and frustration.

In a statewide broadcast, Comrade Garba reassured residents that the administration of Governor Mohammed Umar Bago remains dedicated to their well-being. The government is committed to alleviating hardships by offering various grains at a 50 percent discount.

Garba expressed deep gratitude for the citizens’ decision to avoid the protests and engage in dialogue instead. “Your commitment to unity and constructive dialogue exemplifies our collective dedication to Niger State’s progress and development,” he stated.

Acknowledging that participation in the protests could have caused significant damage, Garba praised the residents for their role in advancing the state’s development. He extended his thanks to various groups, including the National Youth Council of Nigeria (NYCN), Student Union Government (SUG), National Association of Niger State Students (NANISS), Artisan Association, Traditional Leaders, Imams Forum, Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Vigilante Groups, Road Transport Unions, and Marketers Association.

Garba also commended journalists for their minimal coverage of the protests, emphasizing that the administration prefers dialogue to address conflicts and advance development. He acknowledged the efforts of security forces and local vigilante groups in preventing mass participation in the protests, which led to casualties and property damage.

The Acting Governor reassured the public that the Niger State government is committed to conveying their concerns to the Federal Government and will actively engage to address the state’s challenges. He urged continued understanding and faith in the current administration, emphasizing its openness to constructive criticism and commitment to innovative governance for the state’s overall development.
