Finance Minister, Public Accounts Committee Meet To Strengthen Financial Accountability.

Nigeria’s Minister of Finance and Coordinating Economy, Mr Wale Edun, has reaffirmed the Federal Government’s unwavering commitment to achieving a robust and transparent financial management system, even as he assured of the full implementation of the 2024 budget.

The Finance Minister gave the assurance in Abuja on Wednesday, when he met with the House of Representatives Public Accounts Committee led by its Chairman, Honourable Bamidele Salam.

The Director Information and Public Relations in the ministry, Mr Mohammed Manga, says in a statement that the discussion focused on fostering collaboration to enhance transparency and efficiency across the Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs) of the Federal Government.

“Key points from the Chairman’s address to the Honourable Minister include:
– An update on numerous hearings with MDAs, addressing auditor reports and compliance issues.
– The Chairman identified major gaps in the accounting systems and internal controls of various MDAs.
– ⁠He emphasised the importance of blocking revenue leakages to strengthen national finances.
– ⁠A proposed structural reorganisation and training programs for auditors.
– ⁠The Chairman called for accelerated implementation of the 2024 budget to ensure effective performance.

“With the collective efforts of the Federal Ministry of Finance and the Public Accounts Committee of the House of Representatives, Nigeria is poised towards achieving a robust and transparent financial management system, blocking revenue leakages and strengthening national finances”.

According to the statement, “This collaboration is a significant step towards ensuring effective performance and accountability in the management of public funds, thus ensuring a brighter future for all Nigerians.

Members in attendance include Jeremiah Umar, Daniel Asama Ago, Matthew Nwogu, Aliyu Bappa, Nyampa Zakaria Dauda, Kuye Ademorin, Akiba Bassey, and Olatunji Akinosi”, the statement added.
