Barely 48 hours after a secondary school building in Jos, Plateau State collapsed, killing 22 students and over hundreds rescued, another building collapsed on Saturday in Kubwa, a satellite town in Bwari Area Council of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
Our correspondent gathered that no fewer than four persons were rescued from the remains of a collapsed two-storey building located at Sultan Dasuki Road, Phase 2, Site 2, Kubwa, Bwari Area Council, Abuja, on Saturday.
Sources said the building, close to the popular Cupid Hotel (formerly Al-Hilal Hotel), had been converted from a hospital to a residential apartment with 45 self-contained rooms.
Confirming the incident, the spokesperson for FCT Emergency Management Department (FEMD), Nkechi Isa, said in a statement that the department received news of the tragedy through a distress call from passersby on its 112 emergency toll-free number at about 6:45 a.m.
Isa added that two of the rescued victims were taken to Kubwa General Hospital for medical treatment, while efforts were ongoing to rescue other persons who might be trapped in the building.
Officials of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), FCT Fire Service, Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), the Civil Defence Corps, and the Nigeria Police were on hand to address the situation.
Responding to the incident, the Acting Director General of FEMD, Mrs. Florence Dawon Wenegieme, who was spotted at the scene, promised that search and rescue operations would continue until the last person is rescued. She appealed to developers to adhere strictly to building codes and avoid using substandard materials for construction.
