The Nigeria Labour Congress NLC has called on the state government and security agencies in the state to prioritize intelligence gathering to outsmart criminal elements in the area.
The Chairman of NLC in the state, Comrade Gabriel Amari, made the call in Lokoja on Wednesday in his Workers’ Day speech during the 2024 May Day celebration.with theme,”People first.”
Taking an overview of insecurity in Nigeria, with particular concern to Kogi state,Amari noted with concern that the pervasive insecurity had created hurdles for economic growth, investment and business development, adding that the sad development had alternately affected the entire labour force.
He said:”In today’s era, effective policing relies heavily on intelligence gathering.
“The constant threats to violence, kidnappings and extortion deter both local and international investors, resulting in decline in job opportunities, hindering business growth and limiting economic progress.”
The labour leader described as disheartening to observe that despite the efforts of the current administration in the state to tackle insecurity, there were still security breaches in some parts of the state.
Amari, who made reference to the recent incident in Agojeju-Odo community in Omaha Local Government Area of the state, disclosed that six kogi state workers lost their lives.
According to media reports,no fewer than 19 persons died in the crisis.
” Therefore, there is the a need to support community policing initiatives and enlist the services of hunters to complement law enforcement efforts.
