As part of measures to improve on its digital infrastructure, Niger state government has approved a pioneering digital involving the installation of a 40-kilometer fiber metro ring across the state capital.
This is part of the private sector partnership initiative by the Governor Mohammed Umar Bago-led administration as the company has promised to provide public Wi-Fi services, Fiber-to-the-Home (FTTH) connectivity, fixed telephony, and internet access at all state-owned tertiary institutions within Minna, the state capital ring.
The Commissioner for Communications & Digital Economy, Hon. Suleiman Isah, disclosed this in a statement in Minna on Monday ,adding that the initiative is part of bold moves to enhance state’s digital infrastructure.
“The State Executive Council, led by Governor Umaru Bago, has approved a pioneering digital initiative by giving the green light for a private Fiber Optic Company to operate with a remarkable zero naira per linear meter Right of Way (RoW) charge,”he said.
This landmark decision, according to the commissioner,signaled the administration’s unwavering commitment to fostering an environment conducive for private sector investments and to promote technological advancement.
The Commissioner, who called on relevant stakeholders to leverage on the initiatives, said the new order was set to significantly boost digital connectivity, empowerment of students and faculties with enhanced access to information and communications technology.
“While the standard RoW charge in Niger state remains at N145 per linear meter, as per the 2022 gazette of the consolidated revenue administration law, Governor Bago and his cabinet members recognize the paramount importance of digital infrastructure in driving economic growth and development.
Suleiman Isah said the Bago-led administration is dedicated towards initiatives that prioritizes the welfare and interests of the people above his personal gains, hence the state government’s commitment to support proposals that do not rely on state resources to finance and underscored the significance of private sector drivers in providing for sustainable digital infrastructure.
“Niger state is proud to position itself as a sub-national prototype state offering an enabling environment for private sector innovation, by embracing forward-thinking policies and fostering collaborative partnerships with the aim of unlocking new opportunities and propel itself towards prosperous future,” he added.
