The Nasarawa State Government has expressed displeasure over the lukewarm attitude of most people in the state toward the monthly environmental sanitation in the state and arrested 48 persons for violating the state Environmental Sanitation laws.
The Chief Environmental Officer in the State, Alhaji Abubakar Mohammed, expressed the feeling of the state government while briefing Journalists, shortly after the monthly sanitation in Lafia, the state capital on Saturday.
Abubakar announced that the defaulters would be proscuted in accordance with the provisions of the law, explaining that the mobile court had earmarked fines for the various offences.
He gave an assurance that the state government would not relent in enforcing the environmental laws meant for for the benefit of the people.
He said in this era of COVID-I9 coupled with the recent outbreak of cholera in some parts of the country and with an increase in reported cases of typhoid and malaria, there was the great need for all citizens to Continue to keep their environment clean, always.
Abubakar explained that one of the remedies to prevent the spread of infectious diseases would be for residents to ensure effective participation in the sanitation.
The Chief Environmental Officer, who revealed that the state government had recruited more enforcement officers to enable the full enforcement of the state environmental laws, appealed to the people to comply with the sanitation laws to avoid getting into unnecessary problem.
The Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources, Alhaji Aliyu Agwai, praised the efforts of the enforcing officers which he noted resulted in compelling most residents to comply with the exercise.
He called for strict compliance from members of the public,to ensure a clean and healthy environment in the state.
