The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Kogi State has raised concern over insecurity in the country and its impact on the state, urging governments at all levels to intensify efforts to protect lives and property.
The party’s position was made known on Tuesday in Lokoja by the Kogi PDP Chairman, Hon. Muhammed Sanni Gambo, while addressing journalists after a meeting of the State Working Committee (SWC) at the party’s secretariat.
Gambo called on residents of the state to remain vigilant, security-conscious and proactive by providing credible information to relevant authorities, stressing that security is a collective responsibility of government and the people.
“Our people must be able to sleep with their two eyes closed and go about their legitimate businesses without fear,” he said, adding that the PDP was ready to collaborate with government and security agencies by offering constructive suggestions aimed at improving safety across the state.
Speaking further, the PDP chairman called on the Kogi State Independent Electoral Commission (KOSIEC) to extend the timetable for the 2026 local government elections, warning that the current schedule could hinder the full participation of opposition parties, particularly the PDP.
He explained that the appeal for an extension became necessary following his recent emergence as chairman through a court order, noting that fairness, equity and democratic principles require that all political parties be given adequate time to prepare and participate in the polls.
Gambo described the swift closure of nomination forms as a major setback to the PDP and appealed to KOSIEC to review the timetable in the interest of justice, inclusiveness and democratic balance.
“There must be an extension to enable our party to participate fully in the local government elections. This is about fair play and respect for democracy. We are confident of victory whenever a level playing field is provided,” he said.
On internal party affairs, Gambo announced that the PDP had resolved to set up reconciliation and other strategic committees to address grievances and reunite aggrieved members as part of efforts to rebuild and strengthen the party ahead of future elections.
He recalled a Federal High Court judgment of November 10, which he said affirmed him as the duly elected chairman of the PDP in Kogi State, and urged party members to rally behind his leadership.
The PDP chairman called on members who had defected or were sitting on the fence to return to the party, describing the PDP as their political home and stressing that the party was focused on unity, internal development and growth rather than fighting individuals or groups.
Declaring that the PDP had entered a new era in Kogi State, Gambo said the party was determined to put past divisions behind it and work collectively towards becoming a stronger and more formidable opposition.
He urged party leaders, stakeholders and members to set aside personal interests and support the rebuilding process, noting that the PDP remains committed to reclaiming political power at both the state and national levels in 2027 with the aim of restoring dignity, good governance and prosperity to Nigerian families.
Gambo, therefore,called for unity and sacrifice among party members and wishing the people of Kogi State a peaceful and prosperous 2026.
