Teqball, the fast-growing sport that blends football and table tennis, holds immense potential to thrive in Nigeria if adequately supported, says Mr. Halim Zaccah, Chairman of the Rivers State Teqball Association.
Speaking with journalists on Tuesday in PortHarcourt,Zaccah highlighted that Teqball, introduced to Nigeria in 2018 by the Hungarian Embassy, aligns perfectly with the nation’s rich football culture.
“Nigerians love football and we have great footballers. Teqball is a branch of football, and with the right support, it can grow rapidly across the country,” he said.
Zaccah revealed that the association has trained numerous youths nationwide and noted that Teqball, which was previously showcased as a demonstration sport at the National Sports Festival, will feature as a medal event at the upcoming festival in Enugu State.
Our correspondent reports that currently, the sport is played in over 30 states, with Rivers State actively recruiting young players from secondary schools and tertiary institutions. The state has emerged as a dominant force in the women’s category at national competitions.
The Rivers State Teqball Association chairman praised the Commissioner for Sports, Mr. Christopher Green, for his unwavering support, and lauded the association’s patron, Ambassador Paul Ngwaba, for his fatherly guidance and encouragement.
