The Kogi State Governor, Alhaji Ahmed Usman Ododo, has formally unveiled the Ajaokuta Economic City, also known as the Kogi–Hunan Free Trade Zone, describing it as a transformative project that marks the beginning of a new economic era for both Kogi State and Nigeria.
The governor made the declaration during a press conference in Abuja, stating that the project stands among the most visionary economic initiatives in Nigeria’s recent history.
Speaking with optimism, Governor Ododo said the Free Trade Zone would redefine industrialization, job creation, global competitiveness, and technological growth for generations.
“This is the birth of a new economic engine for our people. Today, we are planting the seed of generational prosperity,” he stated.
He explained that the project followed months of rigorous technical studies, high-level government engagements, and strategic consultations with investors and development partners from the People’s Republic of China.
The governor expressed profound gratitude to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, for his swift approval and unwavering support, describing it as a demonstration of the President’s commitment to the Renewed Hope Agenda and his confidence in Kogi State as Nigeria’s next industrial powerhouse.
Ododo also acknowledged the contributions of NEPZA, NACCIMA, NEZA, the Central Bank of Nigeria, the IRS Group, and private sector partners for their critical advisory roles and steadfast belief in the project.
Highlighting Kogi’s strategic positioning, Governor Ododo described the state as Nigeria’s natural logistics hub, bordered by ten states, including the FCT.
He noted Ajaokuta’s status as host to Africa’s largest steel complex and Lokoja’s globally recognized confluence of the Niger and Benue rivers, unique assets that make Kogi the ideal location for a world-class Free Trade Zone.
He further assured investors of robust security architecture within the zone, backed by enhanced intelligence operations, surveillance, and collaboration with national security agencies.
Governor Ododo revealed that the Ajaokuta Economic City would unlock vast opportunities in manufacturing, agro-processing, logistics, technology, and innovation.
He emphasized that institutions such as Federal University Lokoja, Prince Abubakar Audu University Anyigba, CUSTECH Osara, and Kogi State University, Kabba would supply the highly skilled workforce needed to drive industrial activities in the zone.
“This project tells the world that Kogi State is ready to lead, innovate, industrialize, and compete globally,” he declared, extending an open invitation to local and international investors.
He affirmed that the initiative would build a more prosperous Kogi State and contribute significantly to Nigeria’s economic strength.
The unveiling of the Kogi–Hunan Free Trade Zone, he added, is a defining milestone that positions Kogi as a rising industrial epicenter.
