The President,Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Monday welcomed former Governor of Kogi State, Captain Idris Ichala Wada, who officially defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Also received were Hon.Sam Abenemi, the Deputy Governorship candidate of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) in the 2025 election, and several other prominent opposition figures from across the state.
Speaking at the event, Tinubu, represented by his Vice, Kashim Shettima, expressed joy over the development, describing it as a significant moment for the ruling party.
“It gladdens my heart to witness this day. I am pleased that good governance is being recognized in Kogi State. This marks a new chapter in the life of APC, both in Kogi and in Nigeria as a whole. I am particularly delighted to receive an elder statesman, Capt. Wada. We are now united in the confluence of progress,” the President said.
“A coalition of credible leaders is forming within the APC. You have joined a family that is driven by peace and progress, and you will not regret it,” he added.
Shettima, who vowed to convey the news of the defection to President Tinubu, declared that the President’s re-election bid in 2027 is now “certain”.
“In the Confluence State today, the message is clear: President Ahmed Bola Tinubu’s victory in 2027 is total. “I appreciate the people of Kogi for speaking with one voice,”Shettima said.
Our Correspondent report that at the brief but colourful and vibrating ceremony, each of the decampees, led by former Governor Wada, received the APC flag.
In his remarks, Capt. Wada, speaking on behalf of the defectors, said joining the APC was a considered decision.
“There are many reasons why I joined the APC. One, it is a progressive party. Two, President Tinubu has a clear vision for the country.
“Removing the oil subsidy was the right move. Since then, we have seen a regular drop in the price of foodstuff, the naira has appreciated against the dollar, and the economy has improved.
“The dividends of democracy under Mr. President are numerous. We believe it is time to unite and ensure his victory in 2027,”Wada said.
Earlier, state APC Chairman, Alhaji Abdullahi Bello, assured that President Tinubu won’t need to campaign in Kogi for his second term.
“His victory here is already assured,” Bello declared.
