The city of Onitsha, Anambra State, came alive on Friday as indigenes and guests gathered for the 2025 Ofala Festival, a royal celebration steeped in tradition, colour, and cultural pride, held in honour of His Majesty, Igwe Alfred Nnaemeka Achebe, the Obi of Onitsha.

Among the dignitaries that graced the historic festival was the President of the Ahmadu Bello University (ABU) Alumni Association, World Wide,Mal. Adamu Mamman Kontagora (Barden Kontagora), whose visit was warmly received by the association’s Vice President (South East), Dr. Nwokoye Mathew Okechukwu.

In a statement in Onitsha, Dr. Nwokoye described the National President’s visit as a remarkable gesture of unity and cultural appreciation that reflects the enduring bond between Nigeria’s diverse regions.

“We, the Ndi Anambra State branch, say a heartfelt ‘Nnooo!’ , meaning ‘Welcome!’ in our beloved Igbo language. Your presence here is not only an honour to the people of Onitsha but also a symbol of national unity and brotherhood,”Dr. Nwokoye said

The Ofala Festival, one of Nigeria’s most prominent traditional events, marks the end of the Igwe’s annual period of seclusion and his reemergence to bless his subjects.

The occasion typically draws royalty, political leaders, business executives, and cultural enthusiasts from across the country and beyond.
