The General Overseer of the Charismatic Renewal Ministry (CRM), Dr. Cosmas Ilechukwu, has outlined key steps the new Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof. Joash Amupitan, must take to succeed in his new role.
Speaking on Sunday during a special church service held in Abuja to pray for Nigeria and its leaders, Ilechukwu urged Amupitan to ensure transparency, fairness, and credibility in the conduct of elections across the country.
The Reports recalls that President Bola Tinubu recently appointed Amupitan as INEC Chairman, an appointment that received unanimous approval from the National Council of State.
“Let him conduct elections without glitches. Let him allow people to vote with clear conscience,” Ilechukwu said.
“Let him count the votes and announce them exactly as they are cast. When he does this, he will be a great man — nothing more. Do what you are appointed to do: be an unbiased umpire.”
Earlier in his sermon titled “Righteous Governance: The Template for Nigeria’s Greatness,” Ilechukwu, who also convenes The Change We Need Nigeria Initiative (TCWNNI), urged leaders to embrace justice, integrity, and fairness as foundations of national progress.
Quoting the Bible, he said: “Psalm 89:14 declares that righteousness and justice are the foundation of God’s throne. What the scripture speaks of here is the seat of divine authority.”
Explaining the concept further, he said righteous governance is a morally upright approach to leadership rooted in justice, fairness, and integrity—where leaders deliberately prioritize the well-being and rights of all citizens, especially the vulnerable.
He stressed that righteous governance could be fostered through the rule of law, accountability, transparency, and citizen participation in decision-making.
“Righteous governance builds trust between leaders and the people. It promotes social stability, drives economic growth, and encourages human flourishing,” he said. “That is why I invite everyone to join forces to promote righteousness in our homes, schools, churches, public spaces, and in the country at large.”
Dr. Robert Agbahia, Chairman of the Organising Committee of TCWNNI, said the initiative was created to use the platform to engage both leaders and citizens on critical national issues.
According to him, discussions held annually through the programme have often served as prophetic guidance to Nigeria’s political class.
Our correspondent reports that the 14th edition of the programme featured songs, praises, and intercessory prayers for Nigeria’s leaders, citizens, and the nation.
