Former Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice in Kwara State, Titus Ashaolu (SAN), has urged governments across all levels to create an enabling environment that will encourage job creation and steer Nigerian youths away from cybercrime and other criminal activities.
Speaking with journalists in Ilorin on the state of the nation, on Saturday, Ashaolu stressed that when youths are given access to incentives and opportunities to start businesses or learn vocations, they are less likely to engage in criminal acts.
“There is an urgent need for government to support young people with funding, security, and infrastructure, especially in areas like farming, to make such ventures both attractive and safe,” he said.
The legal luminary also charged parents to take responsibility for monitoring their children, guiding them on the dangers of cybercrime and other anti-social vices.
He lamented the growing trend in society where the pursuit of wealth at all costs overshadows the values of hard work and integrity.
“Many youths today set unrealistic targets on how to acquire wealth without having any visible means of livelihood. This development is disturbing and must be addressed,” he noted.
Ashaolu further advised parents to instill godliness and respect for the law in their children, stressing that such values are key to raising good leaders for the future.
While commending anti-graft agencies for their efforts in arresting and prosecuting offenders, the Senior Advocate emphasized that punishing lawbreakers serves as a deterrent to others who may be tempted to follow the same path.
