Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), has written to the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), requesting that his case be included in the agenda of the 2025 NBA Annual General Conference holding in Enugu State.
In a letter addressed to the NBA President, dated August 18, 2025, and received at the association’s national secretariat on August 22, Kanu urged the body to use its platform to examine what he described as legal and human rights issues surrounding his trial. The letter was made available to newsmen on Friday in Abuja.
The correspondence, titled “Re: Miscarriages of Justice in the Case of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu” and personally signed by him, emphasized the NBA’s role as a guardian of the legal profession and promoter of the rule of law.
“My name is Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), an organisation registered in several countries and advocating for the right to self-determination, which is a fundamental human right guaranteed both locally and internationally,” he wrote.
Kanu called on the NBA to investigate his claims, affirm that no Nigerian should be detained or tried under repealed laws, and uphold judicial accountability in order to restore public confidence in the legal system.
According to him, his appeal to the association goes beyond his personal case, stressing that it concerns the wider principles of justice and the rule of law in Nigeria.
“The Bar cannot be silent. I hereby call on the Nigerian Bar Association to include these issues as part of the discussions in the ongoing 2025 NBA Annual Conference in Enugu State,” he stated.
