The Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency (NIHSA) has warned that Kogi, the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Lagos, and 26 other states are at risk of heavy flooding between August 7 and August 21, 2025.
The warning, issued on Thursday by NIHSA’s Director-General, Umar Ibrahim, is based on forecasts of rising river levels and persistent rainfall likely to affect the identified states during the period.
Other states at high to very high flood risk, according to the agency include Adamawa, Delta, Benue, Ebonyi, Edo, Gombe, Bauchi, Imo, Jigawa, Kaduna, Kebbi, Kwara, Nasarawa, Akwa Ibom, Sokoto, Taraba, Yobe, Zamfara, Niger, Ogun, Ondo, Plateau, Rivers, Anambra, Bayelsa, Borno, and Cross River.
According to Ibrahim, 198 Local Government Areas (LGAs) and 832 communities are within the projected flood impact zones. He urged emergency management stakeholders in the affected states to activate response protocols and prepare evacuation plans for at-risk communities.
NIHSA said the alert is part of its ongoing efforts to reduce the devastating impacts of seasonal flooding, which continues to cause infrastructure damage and mass displacement across the country each year.
Our reports gathered that the latest warning comes after the Lagos State Government advised residents of Lekki, Ikorodu, and Ajegunle to relocate from lowlands to higher grounds to avert possible flood disasters.
