Former Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Chief Michael Aondoakaa, says Nigeria’s agriculture sector can generate more wealth than crude oil if modern farming practices are fully embraced.
Speaking in Makurdi at the distribution of free improved seeds to farmers by Teryima Nigeria Limited, Aondoakaa described Benue’s fertile land as an untapped goldmine with the potential to transform the state into Nigeria’s economic powerhouse.
“Do you know we can produce groundnut oil that’s more expensive than petrol? A litre of groundnut oil costs more than fuel. Benue is the richest state in Nigeria. Our agricultural oil is worth more than crude,” he said.
He noted that crops such as ginger, beans, and onions have witnessed significant price surges, making them highly profitable ventures for farmers.
Aondoakaa urged farmers to adopt irrigation farming and learn from the innovative approach of Teryima Nigeria Limited’s CEO, Vitalis Tarnongu, who has mobilised women into cooperatives to scale up production.
The ex-minister also revealed plans to partner with Tarnongu to present a proposal to the government and convene a major conference to showcase Benue’s most profitable crops.
Earlier, the Benue State Chairman of the All Farmers Association of Nigeria (AFAN), Chief Abel Owoicho, commended Teryima Nigeria Limited for empowering farmers with free seeds and pledged sustained collaboration to boost food sufficiency.
In his remarks, the Ter Ushongo, Chief Augustine Kuma, said the initiative would significantly strengthen rural food production, particularly through women who supply fresh produce from villages to urban markets.
The event also featured award presentation to three individuals, including the former minister, in recognition of their early support for Teryima Nigeria Limited’s agricultural mission.
