The Governor of Niger State, Hon. Mohammed Umar Bago, has approved the immediate reopening of Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida University (IBBU), Lapai, which was shut down about a month ago due to security concerns following the tragic loss of a student.
A statement issued by the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Alhaji Abubakar Usman,in , Minna on Friday said the decision to reopen the institution followed a comprehensive review of the security situation and the completion of infrastructural improvements within the university.
“Governor Bago has approved the immediate reopening of IBBU, Lapai, which was temporarily closed due to security concerns and the unfortunate death of a student,” the statement read.
According to the statement signed by Lawal Tanko, Information Officer in the office of the SSG, Governor Bago expressed satisfaction with the enhanced security measures and infrastructure put in place to ensure the safety of students, staff, and the entire university community.
To make up for lost academic time, the Governor also directed that full academic activities should resume on Monday, August 4, 2025.
The state government reiterated its unwavering commitment to the safety and welfare of students and staff, emphasizing that ensuring uninterrupted academic progress remains a top priority.
The governor commended the collaborative efforts of security agencies, the university management, staff, and community leaders in addressing the two major challenges that led to the closure, security and accommodation.
Governor Bago reaffirmed his administration’s dedication to education as a cornerstone for development and assured the university community of continued state support.
The government also urged all returning students and staff to adhere strictly to established security protocols and to cooperate fully with university authorities to ensure a safe and smooth resumption.
