The Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Niger State, Tanko Beji, has dismissed concerns over the recent resignation of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar from the party, insisting that the PDP remains strong and united with or without him.
Speaking in an interview with Journalists in Minna amid speculations that some members,including a state Legal Adviser,are planning to defect to other political platforms, Beji maintained that every member is at liberty to explore political opportunities elsewhere.
“The PDP in Niger State is intact,no shaking. We are not moved by Atiku Abubakar’s resignation from the party,” he declared.
Beji described the development as a win-win, both for Atiku and the PDP.
“Atiku’s resignation is good for him and good for our party. One person leaves, five new members come in. We wish him the best, just as he wished us well for staying,”he said.
Addressing Atiku’s recurring defections, Beji noted: “Atiku met us in the PDP, left for the ACN, and later returned when he didn’t get what he wanted. People didn’t leave the party then, and they won’t now. He’s left again,let him go.”
He further emphasized that electoral victory depends more on popular support than party affiliation.
“Yes, your choice of party may influence your chances, but politics is ultimately about people’s endorsement across the country,”
“A political party is a platform of goodwill. If he thinks leaving the PDP will help him win the presidency, we’re watching. Time will tell,”he said.
