The Kogi State Police Command has launched an investigation into the sudden death of a senior lecturer at Prince Abubakar Audu University (PAAU), Anyigba, Dr. Olabode Abimbola Ibikunle, who reportedly died during an alleged sexual encounter with a female student.

The Police spokesperson, SP William Aya confirmed the incident in a statement to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lokoja on Friday, describing it as “unfortunate.”

According to the police, the incident occurred on Tuesday, July 15, 2025, at a hotel in Anyigba, and was reported by the hotel manager, Moses Friday.

“Preliminary reports indicate that a 22-year-old, 200-level female student of the institution, Gloria Samuel, rushed to the hotel reception to alert staff that the lecturer had collapsed in the room shortly after their encounter,” Aya said.

The police were immediately notified, and the lecturer was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead by a medical doctor.

Aya further confirmed that an autopsy has been conducted to determine the actual cause of death, while investigations are ongoing.

Sources within the university community alleged that Dr. Ibikunle, who was married with children, checked into the hotel earlier that day with the student from the Department of Social Studies Education.

The police also confirmed that the student involved was arrested, initially held in custody, and later transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) for further questioning.

Aya assured the public that further action would be taken based on the outcome of the ongoing investigation.
