By Barth Ikiebe in Abuja.

The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command has foiled an attempted armed robbery in the Zone E Extension area of Apo Resettlement, Abuja, rescuing three victims during a late-night operation.

The Command’s Public Relations Officer, SP Josephine Adeh in a statement she made available to Journalists in Abuja, said the the incidrnt happened on Sunday, June 23, 2025.

According to her, the victims were found with varying degrees of injuries and were promptly evacuated to Sahad Hospital for emergency medical attention.

Tragically, one of them later died from gunshot wounds and was confirmed dead by medical personnel. His body has been deposited in the hospital’s morgue, she added.

The Command’s spokesperson said that the operation was triggered by a distress call from a commercial motorcycle rider who reported heavy gunfire in the area around 10:30 p.m.

“Responding swiftly, the Divisional Police Officer of Apo Division, CSP Uchenna Igwebuike, led his Ambush and Surveillance Teams to the scene.

“The team came under attack but held their ground until a reinforcement team, led by the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of Operations, DCP Isyaku Sharu, arrived,”SP Adeh said

She said that the combined police forces engaged the assailants in a fierce gun battle, adding that overpowered by the police’s superior firepower, the attackers fled into nearby hills under the cover of darkness.

She said that a light green Toyota Corolla with registration number GWA 620 AU, belonging to one of the victims, was recovered at the scene, pointing out that a joint manhunt involving police operatives and local vigilante groups is ongoing to track down the fleeing suspects.

The Commissioner of Police, CP Ajao S. Adewale, extended his condolences to the family of the deceased and reaffirmed the Command’s commitment to the safety and security of all residents within the FCT.

He also called on residents, especially those in and around Apo Resettlement, to remain vigilant and report anyone found with gunshot wounds or suspicious injuries to the nearest police station or through the Command’s emergency lines: 08032003913 or 08028940883.

“The FCT Police Command will not relent in its efforts to rid the Territory of criminal elements

“The safety and security of residents remain our top priority,” the CP emphasized, calling for continued public cooperation in the ongoing fight against crime.
